TODAY, October 8th, at 3:00pm at Carmody's Irish Pub in Duluth , Minnesota nurses will present Tom Horner with a “Contract with Working Families” and ask that he pledge to put the needs of working families ahead of his close relationship with Twin Cities Hospitals and disclose his client list.

Tom Horner’s Contract with Working Families
I, Tom Horner, hereby pledge to immediately disclose any and all contractual agreements I have had with clients in the past two years, including the Twin Cities Hospitals, my last remaining Public Relations/Communications client. I realize that my relationship with the Twin Cities Hospitals, which have more than $7 billion in yearly revenue, as a paying customer serves as a major conflict of interest should I become Minnesota ’s next Governor. I therefore recuse myself from direct interaction with any particular matter relating to the Twin Cities Hospitals.
Additionally, I pledge that neither the Twin Cities Hospitals nor any other corporate entity will have special access to or favor with my office should I become Governor. Instead, I agree, in writing, to do everything in my power to always put the needs of the working families of Minnesota ahead of any corporate entity and/or its financial agenda.

Ole Savior and the broken window

Perennial candidate Ole Savior is giving his speech right now on the convention floor. He mentioned that his car window was broken, and we’ve got more on that: [Originally published in the PIM Weekly Report]
The PIM squad shared a breakfast room with gubernatorial candidate Ole Savior, who shared tales of woe from Thursday night. Thinking he’d enjoy a relaxing evening at the Fon-du-Luth Casino, Savior ended up 320 bucks down at the slots, then found the window of his vehicle shattered! He had great things to say about Duluth police, though, who apprehended a suspect immediately.

I WILL BE AT DFL STATE CONVENTION AND MAY BE REPORTING LIVE FROM DULUTH THIS WEEKEND
This weekend, I will be in Duluth for Democratic Farmer Labor (DFL) party State Convention at the Duluth Entrainment Convention Center.
I am Alternate Delegate so I will try my best to cover the State and will do some reporting but not the whole time depending on my schedule and whatever is going on.
As for Saturday’s endorsement for Governor, I will be getting results when they are available.
I also will be tweeting live as well. Follow me at www.twitter.com/mncapitol throughout the weekend.

Instant runoff voting supporters' next stop: Duluth

St. Paul, Minn. — Supporters of instant runoff voting hope to bring the alternative voting system to Duluth next.
Minneapolis held its first instant runoff election yesterday, which saw low turnout but no major problems. St. Paul voters approved using IRV for city elections starting in 2011.
Fair Vote Minnesota executive director Jeanne Massey says her group wants to put an IRV referendum on the ballot in Duluth as soon as next year.
"There has been a strong organizing committee working very hard for the better part of a year or more and they thought maybe they might even put it on the ballot this year," Massey said. "But they wanted to see how the process would go in Minneapolis and St. Paul and then figure out what that would mean for Duluth."
Instant runoff lets voters rank the candidates for each office on the ballot in order of preference.
IRV opponents are taking their fight to court. They accuse Fair Vote of deceptive campaign practices in St. Paul and hope the Minnesota Supreme Court will reverse its finding earlier this year that IRV is constitutional.

Reader's view: How will we pay for Oberstar’s mileage tax?

I would like to comment on the proposed mileage tax, about which U.S. Rep. Jim Oberstar wrote in a May 5 commentary in the News Tribune, “New sources of money needed to invest in roads and bridges.”
Where does Oberstar think the money will come from to pay for this and to install GPS technology in all of our vehicles?
The government is raising taxes. Meanwhile, people are losing their jobs. Doesn’t the government care? How are we going to pay rising taxes and fees without jobs? We have no money for this. Doesn’t the government realize that? Let all the millionaires and billionaires pay more taxes. They get by a lot easier than us middle-class and poor-class people.
People are losing their jobs, their homes, etc. Who is going to take care of us? Our government seems to care more about giving other countries money. I feel strongly our government should help its own people first for once.
So I suggest the government drive its own vehicles and let the government leaders pay this mileage tax, if it comes to be. They get things handed to them on a silver platter. Let them see how the people who don’t have much live each day.
Oberstar and the rest of the clan need to start seeing exactly what it is like for the rest of us. I feel if this mileage tax comes to be, there will be trouble and angry people. Where will we get the money to pay this? That is what I would like to know.

Mayor Donny Ness had wisdom teeth removed
According to Mayor Ness's Facebook status, Duluth Mayor Donny Ness had his all four wisdom teeth removed sometimes recently.
Donny, I hope you get better soon. Been there with oral surgery before and I know how painful it can be.
